How the 2025 Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities campaign turns the spotlight on soil health as a strategic asset for potato growers, storages and supply chains worldwide.
On 5 December 2025, World Soil Day turns its attention to the places where most people now live and eat: cities and their surrounding countryside. Under the theme Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities, the FAO-led campaign highlights how urban and peri-urban soils cool overheated streets, absorb stormwater, store carbon and support nearby food production.
For the potato sector, this is not a side show. Much of the world’s current and future potato demand is concentrated in and around cities, and a growing share of production takes place in peri-urban belts where land, water and infrastructure are under mounting pressure.
World Soil Day 2025 is therefore a reminder that the resilience of urban food systems and the resilience of potato value chains rise or fall together on the same foundation: living, well-managed soils.
What World Soil Day 2025 is emphasizing
The 2025 campaign messages are clear and highly relevant for agriculture:
- Urban soils are presented as critical infrastructure, not just leftover spaces between buildings. When they remain permeable and vegetated, they act as sponges for rainfall, buffers against heatwaves, and reservoirs for biodiversity and carbon.
- The main threat being highlighted is soil sealing and compaction – the steady spread of asphalt, concrete and heavily trafficked ground that stops water infiltration, accelerates runoff and flooding, and destroys soil biology.
- The call to action is for cities to re-imagine space starting from soil: de-sealing paved areas where possible, increasing green space, using nature-based solutions for stormwater, and protecting the last fragments of fertile land around urban centres.
World Soil Day will be marked by an official FAO celebration in Rome, alongside a dense calendar of regional events, webinars, youth contests and public outreach activities built around that same theme of urban soil as “hidden infrastructure”.
Why an urban soil theme matters for potatoes
Potato production is often associated with rural plains and valleys, but it is tightly entwined with urbanization in several ways:
- Peri-urban expansion: Many high-value potato regions sit at the expanding edge of growing cities. As housing and industrial parks push outwards, some of the most productive, irrigated potato soils are fragmented, sealed or driven up in price.
- Short supply chains: Demand for fresh potatoes, chilled products and ready-to-cook items is strongest in urban markets. Cities experimenting with climate-smart procurement, school meals and hospital catering depend on nearby growers whose soils can still deliver consistent yield and quality.
- Water and flooding: Sealed cities send more water, more quickly, into the rivers and canals that serve downstream farming areas. Where soils in those potato areas are already degraded or compacted, the combination can mean more erosion, more waterlogging, and higher risk of harvest and storage losses.
- Organic matter and waste streams: Urban regions generate huge volumes of organic waste. Managed well, these can be converted into composts and soil amendments that rebuild potato soils. Managed badly, they contribute to pollution and lost nutrients.
In short, decisions about soil in and around cities affect whether potato growers can secure land, manage water and maintain soil quality in the very regions where processors, packers and consumers are clustered.
Soil health as the foundation of resilient potato systems
Few crops respond as quickly and visibly to soil conditions as potatoes. The core World Soil Day messages translate directly into the daily realities of potato growers and storage managers:
- Structure and compaction influence everything from emergence and root growth to tuber size distribution and harvest damage. Poorly structured soils lead to more misshapen tubers, higher clod content and more bruising at harvest.
- Organic matter and biology underpin disease suppression and nutrient cycling. Low-carbon soils are more vulnerable to erosion, drought and nutrient losses, and provide less biological buffering against soil-borne issues such as common scab or early die complexes.
- Water regulation determines whether fields can be travelled in a narrow harvest window, how well soils hold irrigation or rainfall between events, and how prone tubers are to internal defects, cracking or rot.
- Nutrient efficiency is central to both profitability and regulation. As more jurisdictions tighten rules on nitrogen and phosphorus losses, potato growers in degraded soils face higher risk of leaching, nitrous oxide emissions and compliance headaches. Healthy, well-structured soils allow nutrients to be applied more precisely and used more efficiently.
For processors, packers and retailers, the consequences of soil damage are felt as inconsistent supply, variable specific gravities, higher defect rates and more pressure on storages. Soil health is therefore not only a farm-level technical issue, but a whole-chain risk factor.
Signals potato stakeholders should watch this year
The 2025 World Soil Day campaign is also a useful indicator of broader trends that will affect potatoes:
- National and regional soil strategies are moving quickly from concept to implementation. In Europe and elsewhere, new legislation and monitoring frameworks are emerging that will set clear expectations for soil condition in intensive cropping areas, including potato rotations.
- Educational initiatives are pushing “soil literacy” into schools, community groups and social media. This creates a ready audience for commodity groups and companies that are prepared to show concrete examples of better soil management in potatoes, rather than generic sustainability claims.

The more present the potato sector is in those discussions, the better positioned it will be to secure support for regenerative practices, irrigation investments and landscape-scale soil programmes.

Turning World Soil Day into action in the potato chain
World Soil Day offers a ready-made focal point for practical action and communication in the potato industry. Some options that growers, organizations and companies might consider:
- Use early December to carry out an internal soil health check on key fields supplying seed, table and processing contracts – looking at organic matter trends, compaction, erosion risk and traffic patterns.
- Link farm-level decisions on cover crops, reduced tillage, organic amendments or de-compaction to the World Soil Day theme and share those stories with local media, buyers and community groups.
- Collaborate with local schools, urban gardens or environmental groups on simple activities such as soil pits, cover crop demonstrations or compost projects that showcase potatoes as a practical soil-health crop when managed well.
- Connect the dots for storage managers and agronomists between soil structure, harvest conditions and long-term storability, positioning soil work as a direct investment in storage performance and reduced waste.
Even small, well-communicated steps can help show that the potato sector is not just responding to soil regulation, but actively leading on practical solutions.
Soil health as a non-negotiable for potatoes
World Soil Day 2025 arrives at a moment when the pressures on land, water, climate and food systems are converging, especially around cities. For potatoes, which depend so heavily on the first few tens of centimetres of living soil, the lesson is straightforward: soil health can no longer be treated as a background agronomy topic. It is a strategic asset and a shared responsibility.
If the international potato community chooses to treat World Soil Day not simply as an awareness date, but as an annual checkpoint on concrete soil improvements in fields that grow potatoes for booming urban markets, it will be taking a meaningful step toward securing both its own future and the resilience of the wider food systems it serves.
