Richard Clark bids farewell after three decades of shaping Branston’s potato supply success

After more than three decades of dedicated service to the potato supply industry, Richard Clark, Commercial Director at leading potato supplier Branston, has announced his retirement. Due to step down from his role later this month, Richard’s departure marks the end of an era for the company and the wider industry.

From Family Farming to Executive Leadership

Richard joined Branston in 1989 as a trader, bringing with him a deep-rooted knowledge of farming from his early years working on his family’s farm. His understanding of the agricultural sector helped him progress quickly within the company. Over the years, he expanded his expertise beyond trading, taking on key responsibilities in planning, budgeting, and grower relationship management before ultimately being appointed Commercial Director.

Reflecting on his career, Richard expressed gratitude for the journey he has had at Branston.

“Every day at Branston is different, and I have had a wonderful time over the last three decades learning everything I can about potato supply and contributing to the growth of the business. Branston was very different when I joined back in 1989, and the market continues to evolve, but understanding the whole industry has been key to my career longevity. I feel privileged to have had so many opportunities to learn and grow here.”

A Career Defined by Teamwork and Growth

Throughout his tenure, Richard played a crucial role in developing Branston’s operational and commercial success. One of his proudest achievements has been fostering strong relationships both within the company and across the wider industry.

“Another career highlight has been building our fantastic teams. I have worked with many talented people throughout my career, both internally and externally, and these relationships have been extremely rewarding. After three decades of potatoes, I’m now looking forward to spending some time traveling with my family.”

A Tribute from Branston’s Leadership

Jim Windle, CEO of Branston, praised Richard’s contributions, highlighting his leadership and dedication to the industry.

“Richard’s dedication and hard work over the years have been invaluable, and we’re immensely grateful for everything he has done to help us grow Branston as a business. It’s been a pleasure to work with Richard and experience his passion for the industry. We all wish him and his family well for the future.”

Shaping the Future of the Potato Industry

Jim also emphasized the importance of Richard’s career as an example of the opportunities within the produce and food supply sectors.

“The longevity of Richard’s career is a testament to the breadth of opportunities and depth of real relationships this sector has to offer. It is possible to have an incredibly versatile career in produce and added-value food categories. In these sectors, it’s critical to stay closely connected with both the supply base and customers—something Richard excelled at throughout his career.”

Branston remains committed to investing in people and nurturing long-term careers. While Richard’s expertise will be missed, the company is focused on developing the next generation of talent.

“People often aren’t aware of the progression or breadth of roles available in what is a very challenging but rewarding sector. At Branston, we’re committed to supporting our team in long-term careers like Richard’s. His knowledge and leadership will be missed, but we’re equally excited about the future and the talented individuals who will continue to drive our success.”

Looking Ahead

As Richard prepares for retirement, his legacy at Branston will continue to influence the company for years to come. His leadership, industry expertise, and commitment to growth have left an indelible mark on both the business and the wider potato industry.

For Branston, the transition represents an opportunity to build on Richard’s work, further strengthening its position as a leader in potato supply while continuing to invest in its people and partnerships.
