Avebe and ChainCraft partner to turn potato processing waste into high-value eco-friendly products

In an important move towards environmental sustainability, global potato starch manufacturer Avebe and biotechnology innovator ChainCraft have announced a strategic collaboration to convert potato juice waste into high-value, eco-friendly products.

The partnership will utilize ChainCraft’s groundbreaking fermentation technology to transform residual potato juice, a byproduct of Avebe’s production process, into fatty acids and fertilizers – essential products in agriculture and beyond.

A Step Forward in Avebe’s Sustainability Mission

Avebe, known for its starch and protein solutions derived from potatoes, continually explores ways to enhance sustainability and minimize waste. This new venture with ChainCraft aligns with Avebe’s green initiatives, aiming to maximize resource efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and support the circular economy.

By transforming waste into valuable materials, Avebe reinforces its commitment to sustainable agriculture, creating benefits for its cooperative members, who are primarily potato farmers.

“This collaboration represents a step forward in our sustainability mission,” said David Fousert, CEO of Avebe. “Utilizing ChainCraft’s technology allows us to turn potato juice into resources that boost our efficiency, reduce waste, and benefit our farmers financially. This is not just about adding value but also about securing a more sustainable future for our farmers in the Northern region.”

Innovative Technology to Reduce Fossil Fuel Reliance

ChainCraft’s innovative approach uses organic waste streams as alternatives to fossil fuels and palm oil, helping to preserve forests and reduce greenhouse gases. This technology opens up new possibilities for producers of animal feed, specialty chemicals, and other materials who aim to meet their sustainability targets.

“This collaboration is a critical milestone for ChainCraft,” stated Niels van Stralen, Founder of ChainCraft. “Working alongside a partner like Avebe allows us to scale up and demonstrate our technology’s full potential.”

The collaboration also holds promise for the local economy, with plans for a specialized processing facility in Ter Apelkanaal, Groningen, expected to create jobs and contribute to the region’s growth.

Setting a New Standard in Circular Agriculture

The partnership between Avebe and ChainCraft represents a significant step forward in the development of a circular economy for the potato industry. It has the potential to create new revenue streams for farmers and processors while reducing the environmental impact of starch production.
