The Potato Association of America (PAA) is gearing up for its much-anticipated annual meeting, set to take place from July 21st to 25th, 2024, in the scenic city of Portland, Oregon. Sagar Sathuvalli, the Local Area Host Chair, extends a warm invitation to all PAA members, potato researchers, and industry partners to join this significant event.
Oregon, a state renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich agricultural heritage, is the chosen venue for this year’s gathering. As the 4th largest potato producer in the United States and home to the Oregon State Vegetable, the potato, Oregon’s selection is particularly fitting. The state’s involvement in the Tri-State breeding program, a collaborative effort with Idaho and Washington, underscores its pivotal role in advancing the US potato industry.
The 2024 Annual Meeting promises a comprehensive agenda, focusing on the latest advancements in potato breeding, production, and sustainable practices. Participants can look forward to engaging talks on integrated pest management, nutrient management, post-harvest physiology, and extension and outreach efforts. These discussions are not just theoretical; they are rooted in the practical challenges and innovations shaping the potato industry today.
Beyond the conference rooms, Portland offers a blend of natural beauty and urban sophistication. Nestled at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the city is a stone’s throw away from the volcanic peaks of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. The contrasting landscapes of Oregon, from the lush vegetation of its western valleys to the high desert’s quiet beauty, provide a stunning backdrop for this event.
For those drawn to the urban allure, Portland’s Pearl District is a treasure trove of cultural attractions, from vibrant restaurants and micro-breweries to public art. The absence of sales tax in Oregon adds an extra incentive for shopping enthusiasts.
This meeting marks the first time since 2009 that the PAA will convene in Oregon. It’s an opportunity for the association to showcase the strides made in sustainable potato production and to offer a taste of the warm Pacific Northwest hospitality.
